Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic riding offers the student an opportunity to learn about horsemanship from the ground up. Students groom and tack their own horse and learn about horse anatomy, colours and care.

Once in the saddle, the riders are assisted by volunteers and based on their ability ride their horse through patterns and activities at various gaits. The classes encourage fun with an emphasis on safety and include games as well as horsemanship skills. Students gain confidence and learn teamwork by working with the horses. They also receive the physical benefits of being horseback.

This program is suitable for all ages of riders with most levels of ability.

Benefits for children, youth and adults

Therapeutic riding is a little bit magic...and a lot of meaningful growth!

For children and adults with special needs, time in the saddle becomes so much more than just riding a horse. It’s a chance to build real-world skills in a setting that feels fun, safe, and empowering.

Each ride is a lesson in connection. Riders practice communication as they give cues and work with instructors, develop social skills alongside volunteers and peers, and experience true teamwork with a 1,000-pound partner who responds to their every move.

Along the way, they build confidence, discover leadership, and learn empathy -not just for the horse, but for themselves and others. Horses, in particular, have a remarkable ability to reflect what a rider is feeling. They act as a mirror, responding honestly to emotions, energy, and intent. If a rider is anxious, the horse may hesitate; if they are calm and focused, the horse follows with trust. This creates a powerful feedback loop, encouraging riders to become aware of their thoughts, regulate their emotions, and adjust their behaviors in real time. And that’s where the real transformation happens. Riders don’t just learn how to guide a horse, they learn how to guide themselves.

Where Horses do the Teaching

Horses are uniquely powerful teachers, making them ideal partners in a therapeutic riding setting.

As highly intuitive animals, they respond honestly and immediately to a rider’s body language, emotions, and intent. This creates a natural learning environment where feedback is clear, consistent, and free of judgment. Riders quickly discover that to communicate effectively with a horse, they must develop focus, patience, and self-awareness. Because horses are large yet gentle, they inspire both respect and confidence.

Riders are motivated to step into leadership roles, practice clear communication, and build trust - skills that translate far beyond the arena!

At the same time, the rhythmic movement of the horse supports physical development, while the relationship itself fosters emotional growth and empathy. In many ways, horses turn abstract concepts like confidence, teamwork, and emotional regulation into something tangible. They don’t just help riders learn...they help them feel what success looks like, one step at a time.

Since we all learn differently, interactive learning enables everyone to learn lessons and skill through our experiences. The healing power of horses is the relationships that we build with them. Through equine assisted learning more of the senses are engaged and therefore involving the learner, thereby increasing the probability that they will learn, retain, and apply what they have learned.

Each exercise is custom designed to maximize learning potential and focus on developing individual skills as they work through each fun interactive group challenge. Teams will work to; develop relationships, accept responsibility and accountability; overcome barriers to find change; be encourage to be creative and innovative; find opportunity in working together; realize the benefits associated with effective communication; and recognize the value of mutual trust, respect and personal integrity. All while having fun!
